Applicants must be United States Citizens and at least 18 years old. Wildland firefighters need a high level of muscular and cardiovascular fitness to perform safely in difficult environments such as steep terrain, extreme temperatures, high altitude and smoke. Firefighters must be able to travel for up to 21 days away from their home duty station, and will often work weekends and Holidays.
Firefighters are required to pass a work capacity test as a condition of hire depending on position. The pack test (Arduous Duty WCT) consists of a 3-mile hike with a 45-pound pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less. A WCT is not required for Teton Interagency Dispatch Center or the Teton Interagency Fire Cache.
