Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL)
The Industrial Fire Precaution Level regulates spark-emitting industrial and forest operations — chainsaws, equipment use, and similar activities — on federal lands during fire season (April 1 – October 31). It is set by elevation zone, not by individual rating area:
- High elevation — East Slope, Monument, Ochoco-Maury
- Low elevation — High Desert, Columbia Plateau, John Day Basin

Precaution levels
- I — Fire precaution requirements in effect.
- II — Partial hootowl; higher-risk work restricted to before 1 PM.
- III — Partial shutdown of specified operations.
- IV — General shutdown of covered operations.
IFPL I begins April 1. Levels II and III generally track a Moderate or High fire-danger adjective rating, and IV applies only at Extreme. The current level for each zone appears on the status bar at the top of every page (High elev / Low elev). For full requirements, see the IFPL & PUR Fact Sheet.
