The Horse Fire was reported by a Forest Service  employee on the Big Piney Ranger District Friday June 13, 2025 and is burning in heavy timber and slash. This lightning caused fire is located roughly 10-miles west of Merna, WY 5 miles northeast of McDougal Gap and 2 miles west of Prospect Peak. A Type 3 Incident Management Team and additional resources have been ordered to assist in suppressing the fire. A Type 3 helicopter, 8 smoke jumpers and 3 fire engines and 3 crews are on scene. Smoke is visible from the McDougal Gap and Merna areas. 

Update 6/14/25 8:37 pm - The Horse Fire is approximately 800-acres.  Alpine Hotshots and Wyoming Hotshots are on scenes along with a crew from the Nature Conservancy and local Bridger-Teton National Forest fire engines and crews. There was a lot of smoke in the afternoon but the fire slowed its progress when it hit an older burn scar There are no closures associated with the is fire but people are asked to avoid the Horse Creek road as there is extra traffic and firefighting equipment moving in the corridor.
