09/14/2025 Updated Horse Fire Closure Order and Closure Area Map (NOTE: all roads and trails are now open, no roads or trails are included in this revised closure order)

The Horse Fire is now 100% contained. The fire, approximately 2 miles west of Prospect Peak on the Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest,  is currently contained within its overall footprint, meaning it is no longer spreading beyond certain control features. However, what's crucial to understand is that within this perimeter, there are many "green islands" of unburned vegetation. These areas may look unburned, but they still contain dry fuels—like trees, brush, or grass—that can catch fire and reignite, especially under certain weather conditions like high winds and low relative humidity.

Firefighters are working to secure these green islands by carefully managing and extinguishing any hotspots. But accessing all of these areas can be challenging because some spots are hard to reach, and others may be in places where conditions are too dangerous for crews to safely access. Even though fire managers and crews have made significant progress in containing the fire, they are still assessing those green islands closely. The goal is to make sure the fire doesn't spread beyond its current footprint, but this can take time and constant evaluation.
