A small, abandoned campfire without a fire ring was found smoldering in the upper Curtis Canyon area on the evening of July 5th.  Many and most of the Jackson district camping areas are designated dispersed campsites, requiring campers to use identified numbered sites. For fire safety and protection, these areas require using existing metal fire rings when building a campfire. Building a new fire ring is not advised and may lead to a high cos$ when flames escape the fire ring.  A campfire should always remain attended and must be completely extinguished before leaving. Simply pouring water on the remains of a fire is not sufficient. The charred remains must be repeatedly doused with water and stirred into the campfire ring. All embers and logs, not just the red ones, should be broken up and covered with dirt. Before leaving the area, the campfire remains must be cold to the touch.

Thank you to our camping ambassadors and the vigilant campers in the area for reporting the smoldering fire and taking action and calling Teton Interagency Fire dispatch.
