The Salmon-Challis National Forest covers over 4.3 million acres in east-central Idaho. Included within the boundaries of the Forest is the Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness, the largest contiguous wilderness area in the Continental United States at 2.3 million acres. 1.3 million of those acres are located within the Salmon-Challis National Forest.
The Central Idaho Interagency Fire Center (CIC) is the fire and aviation dispatch office for the Salmon-Challis National Forest. CIC is located at the Public Lands Center in Salmon, ID and serves the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.
