Additional Information

  • Wildland firefighters work in a variety of specialized positions, including fire engine crews, fuels management, hand crews, helitack, interagency hotshot crews, patrol and prevention technicians. The Eldorado National Forest workforce reaches its peak each summer with personnel beginning as early as April and lasting into November. There are many work schedules available; those individuals hired for summer employment are called “seasonals.”
  • Wildland Firefighting is very physically demanding work and all employees must pass the Work Capacity Test at the Arduous level annually before working on the fireline. This entails hiking for 3 miles on flat ground in under 45 minutes while wearing a 45 pound pack.  Visit this link for more information on the Work Capacity Test. http://www.fs.fed.us/fire/safety/wct/2002/brochure_2002.pdf
