The values in the above table are derived from shape files provided by the Weather Prediction Center (WPC). The shape files can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/shapefiles/qpf/. The averages listed are areal averages which are computed by ArcGIS by using a spatial join to a PSA shapefile. The spatial join utilizes a merge rule of mean to represent the average precipitation for a given time period across the entire area of the PSA. Thus, the totals listed under DAYS 1-5 and DAYS 1-7 will not be the sum of the previous periods. Forecasts of precipitation are not available for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
This product was produced via an automated process that utilizes a series of programs written in Python 2.7.5. The ArcMap Models used in conjunction with this process, along with the Python programs, were developed by Denver S. Ingram, Meteorologist.
