RX-301/341 Prescribed Fire Implementation and Plan Preparation

Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce students to the tools and techniques used to perform in the role of a prescribed fire burn boss. The course material is based on the tasks found in the position task book for prescribed fire burn boss. It leads the student through the duties and responsibilities associated with the position of the prescribed fire burn boss including evaluation and implementation of a prescribed fire plan. This course will also provide students with the skills/knowledge to prepare a prescribed fire plan for technical review and approval in accordance with the Interagency Prescribed Fire Planning and Implementation Procedures Reference Guide.


Course Objectives:

  • Provide students with the information needed to successfully review a prescribed fire burn plan for technical accuracy and implement a prescribed burn.
  • Describe prescribed fire planning policies and guidelines.
  • Identify and describe the processes involved in preparing a prescribed fire plan.
  • Develop and defend a prescribed fire plan that safely meets management objectives.


Target Group:
Personnel desiring to be qualified as prescribed fire burn boss type 2 (RXB2) and personnel involved in or that plan to be involved in the preparation of prescribed fire plans. Other positions that would benefit from this course are firing boss (FIRB), fire effects monitor (FEMO), air regulators, fire ecologists, private landowners, other state and private agencies, prescribed fire consultants, and fire planners.

Course Prerequisites:

Successful completion of Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations (S-390).

Proficient in the use of BehavePlus.

Satisfactory completion of pre-selection assessment.

Qualified as a firing boss (FIRB) and incident commander type 4 (ICT4).
