Welcome to the Hungry Horse Helitack  Web site

The Hungry Horse Helitack crew is stationed in the small town of Hungry Horse in northwest Montana. Hungry Horse is ten miles from the west entrance of Glacier National Park, and just minutes from trailheads into the Great Bear and Bob Marshall Wilderness Areas.

The Flathead Valley also includes the towns of Whitefish (home of Montana's largest ski resort, Big Mountain), Kalispell, Columbia Falls, and Big Fork, all within 30 minutes of Hungry Horse. The forest is primarily a recreation forest with many lakes, rivers, and campgrounds.

The 10 person crew consists of a Helitack Manager, Assistant Helitack Manager, 2 Lead Crewmembers, and 6 temporary seasonal firefighters.

The crew provides logistical and tactical firefighting support for the Flathead National Forest. Providing safe, professional, and highly skilled firefighters to handle all aspects of helicopter operations and wildland fire suppression has been the driving principle of the Hungry Horse Helitack Crew since its beginning. Using this as the program goal, the Hungry Horse Helitack have also adapted to better handle the new fire challenges of the future. The crew has evolved into a group of fire management specialists, providing skill and expertise in the realms of Prescribed Fire and Wildland Fire Use to compliment its long tradition of excellence in Helicopter Operations.

Crewmembers typically start work in May and work through September. The helicopter contract begins  in mid July and runs through September. While not engaged in firefighting activities, the crew attends training, completes project work, and maintains fire readiness.
