Zone initial attack resources
respond to about 56 wildfire incidents each year, with roughly
half of those located within the wildland-urban interface. Initial
attack operations are conducted in cooperation with eight fire
departments located within the two counties. The Zone staffs a
Type 6 engine crew in Eagle, Minturn, and Silverthorne.
Fuels
within the Zone consist of grass/sage/pinyon-juniper at the lower
elevations, aspen and lodgepole pine at the mid-elevations, and
spruce-fir at high elevations. Most of the lodgepole pine in the
Zone has fallen victim to a massive mountain pine beetle epidemic;
efforts are underway to mitigate this new fire hazard within the
wildland-urban interface areas in Summit and eastern Eagle counties.
The larger towns within the East Zone are Breckenridge, Dillon, Vail, Silverthorne,
and Eagle.
