Application Process
If you are interested in becoming a Smokejumper candidate, you can apply online at: Avuedigitalservices.com. The minimum requirements include at least one season of wildland fire suppression work.
Generally, all Rookie candidates are GS-5 seasonal employees with the exception of detailers which may hold a different GS level. If you are eligible and qualified you will be ranked among other applicants. Your experience and training will be compared with other applicants as well.
Make sure you read the vacancy announcement thoroughly from top to bottom and follow the instructions carefully when filling out your application. Avue Central has good ‘tips for preparing your application’. This web site will also walk you through the hiring process by clicking on ‘Federal Hiring Tools’. Do not hesitate to call the California Smokejumper Unit (530 226 2888) for clarification regarding the hiring process.
If you are chosen as a candidate, you will still have to successfully complete Rookie training in order to become a Smokejumper. Good luck!
